The Queen’s Beasts Collection is a fascinating series of coins that celebrates the ancient heraldry behind a very modern monarchy.

In 1953, ten statues guarded the entrance to the coronation of Her Majesty The Queen. Known as The Queen’s Beasts, each statue was created to represent a strand of her heritage. Today, these fascinating heraldic beasts have been reimagined for a new era and brought to life on our bullion coins.

The White Lion of Mortimer is the eighth release in the collection and the second lion to feature in this series. Unlike the fierce Lion of England, the White Lion sits uncrowned, with its tail between its legs, a pose representing loyalty and discipline.

The White Lion came to The Queen through her Yorkist heritage. First used by Roger Mortimer, Earl of March (1328–60), a founder Knight of the Order of the Garter, it passed to the House of York and was used by Richard II.

The reverse of each coin has a White Lion holds a shield bearing the white rose of York combined with the sun’s golden rays – a symbol important to Edward IV, who saw the sun as a sign of good luck in battle.

The secure, detailed chainmail background texture is a signature of this bullion collection.

Royal Mint product designer Jody Clark has portrayed the White Lion of Mortimer side-on to emphasise the most important parts of the Lion’s story – its mane, tail and shield. He also designed the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II that appears on the obverse of The Queen’s Beast coins.

Struck in 999.9 fine gold reflected in the coin’s inscription.
