The 4 Ducats gold coin, a commemorative issue like the 1 Ducat, honors Emperor Franz Joseph I, who died in 1916. Post-1915 4 Ducats are restrikes, marked with that year regardless of their minting date by the Austrian Mint. Regular Ducat minting lasted until 1914, with restrikes estimated at 496,501 between 1920 and 1936.

Originally functioning as currency across Europe, the 4 Ducats were made of 98.60% pure gold (23 ¾ carats), weighing 13.76 grams or 0.4430 troy ounces. They feature Franz Joseph I's portrait on the obverse and the double-headed eagle on the reverse, symbolizing the Austrian Empire.
