Timothy Dalton portrayed the fictional British Secret Service agent James Bond as the fourth actor to do so. Dalton's career began in English repertory theatre before transitioning to television and film in 1968. Over the course of the following decade, he solidified his reputation across all three mediums, including multiple stage productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Dalton's interpretation of Bond aligned with the character's "man of contradictions and opposites" nature, opting for a darker and more cold-hearted approach that reached its climax in 1989's Licence To Kill. In this film, Bond defied MI5 to settle a personal vendetta. Although Dalton's tenure as Bond was brief, his portrayal helped redefine the character as a serious action hero entering the final decade of the millennium.
