The Athenian Owl Tetradrachm, which was introduced in 510 BC, was used for almost 500 years throughout the city-states of Ancient Greece and was regularly produced in Athens until 38 BC. The 2017 Niue Athena Owl Stackable 1 oz Silver Coins feature an owl on a branch on the reverse, inspired by the Ancient Greek Tetradrachm.
The owl is accompanied by an olive sprig and a crescent moon above its head, while an inscription at the bottom indicates the metal content as "1 TROY OUNCE .999 FINE SILVER." The obverse of the coins depicts Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, which is believed to be her favorite and is featured on numerous British and Commonwealth currencies. These coins are stackable, thanks to their casino-style reeded edge.
