Product Description:

One of the most iconic coins in Australian numismatics, the Holey Dollar and Dump were created in 1813 to solve a serious coin shortage in New South Wales. Governor Macquarie brought in 40,000 Spanish silver dollars and had William Henshall, a convicted Forger to punch out the outer ring of the coins, these then became the Holey Dollar (worth five shillings), and the centre plug became the Dump (worth fifteen pence).

They were Australia’s very first official currency and marked the colony’s transition from a penal settlement to a functioning economy. With only around 300 Holey Dollars and just over 1,000 Dumps known to exist today, these historic pieces are incredibly rare and highly sought after.

Obverse: A crown with the inscription "NEW SOUTH WALES"

Reverse: the denomination "FIFTEEN PENCE"
