The Macquarie Lighthouse is a remarkable Sydney landmark and one of Australias most significant early structures. Designed by convict architect Francis Greenway, the nations first lighthouse was regarded by Governor Lachlan Macquarie as a noble, magnificent edifice. Reconstructed 60 years later, it has now been helping ships navigate their way safely into Sydney Harbour for 200 years. This bicentenary coin is meticulously struck from 1oz of 99.99% pure silver to our renowned proof standard combining a mirror-like polished background with delicately frosted relief. Incorporating the number 200, the coins reverse pictures Greenways original design with a symbolic beam of light emerging from the Fresnel lens-like glow at the top of the tower.
Issued as legal tender under the authority of the Australian Currency Act 1965, this bicentennial coin portrays the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on its obverse. With a maximum mintage of just 3,000, the coin represents a rare opportunity to honour the important role of the Macquarie Lighthouse and all those who have contributed to its construction, maintenance and continuous operation since 1818. Accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity, each coin in the mintage is housed in a classic textured grey display case and illustrated shipper.
