Holey Dollar and Dump – Iconic Australian Coins
The Holey Dollar and Dump are among the most iconic coins in Australian numismatics. Created in 1813 to address a severe coin shortage in New South Wales, these unique coins have a fascinating history. Governor Macquarie imported 40,000 Spanish silver dollars, which were modified by William Henshall, a convicted forger. Henshall punched out the outer ring of each coin, producing the Holey Dollar (valued at five shillings), while the removed centre piece became the Dump (worth fifteen pence). These coins remain a cornerstone of early Australian currency history and are highly prized by collectors today.
