The Australian Penny was a coin used in the Commonwealth of Australia prior to the decimalisation of Australian coinage in 1966. The Australian penny was first introduced in 1911 and last minted in 1964. The 1919 Australian penny was the first penny minted on Australian soil.
During its coinage there were several subtle variations of the Australian penny, for example different mintmarks denoting where coins were minted. There is a wide variety in the scarcity of pennies with some years having over 3.5 million coins minted and other years much fewer than that. One of the rarest Australian coins is the 1930 Australian Penny which was minted during the economic recession - despite the Commonwealth not ordering any of these pennies to be minted around 3000 are believed to have been made anyway and only 1500 are believed to exist today, mostly in poor quality thus making them extremely rare!
