Known as "the Clement," King John VI ruled over the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves from 1816 to 1825. Following Brazil's independence in 1822, he remained Portugal's monarch until his death in 1826. Simultaneously, he held the honorary title of Emperor of Brazil, while his son, Emperor Dom Pedro I, ruled the newly independent nation.
John VI's reign was marked by constant conflicts and foreign interventions. Fleeing to Brazil during Napoleon's invasion of Portugal, he faced liberal uprisings there and later returned to Europe amid renewed conflicts. His marriage to Carlota Joaquina of Spain was plagued by her repeated conspiracies against him in pursuit of personal interests or Spanish loyalties.
